Social media updates, next gig coming soon!

April 1st, 2012

You may know we have a presence on other sites on the ol’ interweb. The CBC recently rejigged their online music offering, which is now called CBC Music, and our page can now be found at this link:

http://music.cbc.ca/artists/China-Syndrome

You’ll be able to stream a bunch of songs from both our albums here, and even “like” us if you wish. The whole site itself is a great resource for Canadian music.

We’re also now on Soundcloud, where you can find even more of our songs streaming — check it out at:

And don’t forget our next gig is only a few weeks away, Sunday, April 15 @ The Railway Club — check out the poster below and hope to see you there!

Heritage Grill pics, next gig @ the Railway Club

March 18th, 2012

Thanks to everyone who came to our show at The Heritage Grill on March 9. Despite the miserable weather, we had a great turnout and a fun time. Special thanks go to The Heritage Grill for having us again and Mr. David Charan for booking us — check out his band, 2Days&Counting sometime. And thanks also to The Square Roots for playing their debut gig with us–so great to have a psych-folk band in Vancouver and keep your eyes out for their future gigs. Our next show is Sunday, April 15 at the Railway Club; we’ll be sharing the stage with Victoria’s The Tower of Dudes and Vancouver’s rockin’ ukelele ensemble Tiny Tim Overdrive.

This Friday @ the Heritage Grill

March 7th, 2012

We’re stoked to return to the Heritage Grill in New West this Friday night, March 9. We’re also stoked to share the stage with The Square Roots (featuring members of The Strange Magic) for their debut gig — expect psych-folk cosmic country goodness! The approximate set times will be:

8:15-ish to 9-ish- China Syndrome set 1

9:30-ish to 10:30-ish – The Square Roots

11-ish to midnight – China Syndrome set 2

For our sets, expect new songs, old songs and some choice covers. We can’t wait, hope you can join us on Friday.

March 9 at New West’s Heritage Grill

February 14th, 2012

We’re counting down the weeks to our next gig at New Westminster’s Heritage Grill on Friday, March 9. We had a blast the last time we played there in October, which also featured the debut of Hello Polly, the fantastic new glammy rock project led by Paul Leahy (ex-No Fun) and featuring Tony, Gord and Ian from the Pointed Sticks. Look out for Hello Polly’s album this summer from Northern Electric.

Our gig at the Heritage Grill this time features the debut show of another band, The Square Roots, featuring members of the great local band, The Strange Magic. They describe themselves as ”a distinctive blend of cosmic country and acid folk, using an old family recipe handed down to them from Uncle Neil, Old Man Cash, and The Fairport Convention clan. Their songs will take you back to a simpler time, when young and old would gather around the campfire, singing tales of UFO sightings, right wing conspiracies, and the suppression of alternate sources of energy by multinational oil conglomerates.” Sounds so good, we can’t wait to see them!

And look out for the poster around town!

Gung hay fat choy!

January 23rd, 2012

Gung hay fat choy and happy Chinese New Year to everyone! Here’s to a great Year of the Dragon, which is particularly special to two members of China Syndrome…

And thanks to all the kind folks who came to see us at the Railway Club on January 20 – we had a blast! We’d like to especially thank:

  • I.M.U. Productions for booking us
  • S.K. Robot (great band!) for letting us use their bass amp
  • Coloursurround for bringing the drumkit
  • Rob for doing our sound
  • Cowbela Lugosi for being Cowbela Lugosi
  • All the people who danced!
  • Friends of Tim’s who came to the Railway and didn’t know we were playing!
  • The barber guy for complementing us, then giving Vern and Kevin his card to drum up some business
  • The woman who correctly guessed the snippet of “Don’t Stop Believin’ we played in “Another Girl, Another Planet” and won a copy of our CD. Hope you enjoy it!

We’ll soon have some pictures of the show posted in our Photos page. As well, we videotaped the show and have posted three of the songs on our spankin’ new YouTube channel – click the following link and check it out:

Our next show is on Friday, March 9 at the Heritage Grill in New Westminster. We’ll keep you posted in the coming weeks with more details.

Welcome!

Railway Club January 20, 2012

Hi and welcome to our new website! It’s taken us six years and having a web designer join the band (thanks El Chango!), but we’re pleased to finally have a site of our own, and you can consider this the new home for all things China Syndrome. Please bookmark our home page and then come back and visit regularly for news, gig updates, videos, pictures, exclusive tracks and our occasional blatherings. Feel free to check out the site and explore; as always, we welcome your feedback. And yep, despite the luddite tendencies of some of us, we’re with it enough that you can also connect with us on Twitter, Facebook and MySpace via this site!

First things, first, we’re looking forward to playing our first gig of 2012 this Friday, January 20 at the Railway Club in Vancouver, 579 Dunsmuir. And for those of you working people, we’re on at a reasonable hour as we’ll be the first of four bands playing that night starting at 9:45 pm. A great local power pop band, S.K. Robot (of the annual Guided By Voices karaoke night fame) plays right after us, then Coloursurround and The Party on High Street round out the bill. Thanks to Cindy and I.M.U. Productions for booking us once again. We’ll be introducing some new songs as well as playing stuff from our two albums. Hope to see you Friday!
